Cossill shines at Australian Age Championships
Young UWA Uniswim sprint star Ella Cossill (13) proved she can mix it with the best at the recent Australian Age (13-18 years) Swimming Championships held in Brisbane last week. Showcasing the next generation of swimming talent, the Australian Championships boasted 1600 of the best age group swimmers from across the country.
Cossill placed 4th in the final of the 13 years girls 50m Freestyle in a new best time of 27.23 seconds. The one-lap race was won by Queensland sensation Shayna Jack in a blistering 25.50. Cossill’s time places her as the fastest 13 year old in WA this season, and 7th in the WA open rankings. Cossill also took out the 13 year old girl’s title for the 50m Freestyle at the WA State Championships in January earlier this year.
UWA’s High Performance Swim Coach Mel Tantrum was excited by the talent emerging in the new UWA Uniswim Program. “We are the new elite program in town and it is very encouraging to see our young team stand up and achieve outstanding results at their first national championships”, said Tantrum. “It is certainly encouraging for our future”.
Other standout performers for the UWA Uniswim team included Louise Hewitt (100m Freestyle), Sacha Downing (800m Freestyle) and Salwa Sadek (100m Breaststroke).
The UWA boys and girls relay teams significantly improved their rankings in both the freestyle and medley events. The team will now take a short break before focusing on the WA State Championships in July and then the Australian Short Course Championships to be held in Perth in September.
